White Elephant Rules: How to Play and Win

8 min read

If you want a gift swap with guaranteed laughs, White Elephant is hard to beat. It goes by other names too: Yankee Swap in New England, Dirty Santa or "steal-a-gift" elsewhere. In Brazil it's called "amigo ladrão." The fun comes from watching the gift you fell in love with get stolen right in front of you.

How it differs from Secret Santa

In Secret Santa you draw a name ahead of time and buy for that person. In White Elephant, everyone brings one anonymous wrapped gift, and the draw only decides the order in which people pick. There is no "who has whom."

That means the gift must appeal to almost anyone, and the whole game happens on party day.

What you need

  • One wrapped gift per person, within the agreed budget.
  • Numbers from 1 to the group size.
  • A circle or table where gifts stay visible.
  • A host to enforce rules and keep the order.

Step by step

  1. Everyone brings a gift. No tag, no name, within the budget.
  2. Pile the gifts in the center. It helps if the wrapping looks similar so nobody can guess.
  3. Draw the order. Each person picks a number.
  4. Player 1 picks a gift and opens it. Everyone sees what it is.
  5. Player 2 decides. They can open a new gift or steal the one Player 1 opened.
  6. The victim of a steal picks another wrapped gift or steals from someone else, depending on your rule.
  7. Continue until the last player.
  8. Optional final round: Player 1 may swap their gift for any opened gift.

Rules that prevent fights

A steal limit per gift

Agree that a gift can only be stolen two or three times. After that it's "locked" with the current owner. Without a cap, the game can loop forever.

No immediate steal-backs

If your gift was taken, you must choose another. That speeds up the pace.

Thieves can be robbed

Stealing doesn't make you immune. That keeps the tension alive until the end.

A fixed budget

Everyone should spend about the same. A $90 gift beside a $15 gift ruins the mood. Many groups settle around $20 to $30, and $25 is a popular number.

Banned gifts

Nothing perishable that's hard to store, nothing offensive, nothing that needs installation or is unsafe.

What to bring

The trick is interesting enough to spark competition, but neutral enough to please anyone.

Gifts that tend to get fought over

  • Good chocolate or a box of sweets.
  • A nice mug or insulated tumbler.
  • A small lamp or Bluetooth speaker.
  • A coffee, tea or craft beer kit.
  • A card game or small board game.
  • A quality scented candle.

Joke gifts

If your group enjoys humor, mix in one or two funny items, like ridiculous socks or a plush plant. Make sure "gag" gifts still count as gifts.

Variations

Themed White Elephant

Everyone brings something within a theme (kitchen, office, books). It helps people who don't know what to buy.

Newspaper wrapping

Identical wrapping, no clues at all. The surprise gets bigger.

Virtual White Elephant

For remote groups, a host receives the gifts and re-wraps them, or you play with digital gifts such as gift cards and subscriptions.

Unlimited steals

Only for small groups that love chaos. The game ends when everyone says "enough."

Tips for the host

  1. Explain the rules first. Five minutes saves thirty minutes of confusion.
  2. Write numbers on folded papers and let everyone draw theirs.
  3. Let luck decide who goes first. Nobody gets to pick.
  4. Photograph each swap. It becomes a keepsake.
  5. Budget time. A group of 15 takes 30 to 45 minutes.

White Elephant or Secret Santa?

If your group wants connection and personal gifts, choose Secret Santa. If it wants fun, energy and low pressure while shopping, go with White Elephant. Some groups do both: a Secret Santa at home and a White Elephant at the party.

How psiu! helps

You can draw the turn order in the quick draw on psiu! instead of folding paper numbers. Type in the names and watch the order appear. If you'd rather run the classic version, create a free group and draw the matches live.

Summary

Everyone brings a gift, draws the order and chooses between opening or stealing. With a steal limit, a set budget and rules explained upfront, White Elephant is the liveliest game at any holiday party.

Frequently asked questions

How many people do I need?

At least six for the stealing to feel fun, and it works well up to about 20. Beyond that, split into two circles.

What if someone brings a gift that's too cheap?

Have the host peek at wrapped gifts as they arrive, quietly. A friendly nudge before the game beats an awkward moment during it.
